  1. An old-fashioned galvanized garbage can is a great water/moisture/fire-resistant storage container. It is an inexpensive and easily transportable item to store items in. Tip: Use heavy-duty garbage can liners.

  2. Apply a heavy coat of furniture polish before storing wood items. Cover with old sheets and drop cloths rather than plastic which can cause mildew. Do not store a fabric directly on concrete. Sofas and love-seats can be stored on end to save floor space. Always place a protective cover under the item on concrete. Cushions should be wrapped in plastic and placed on top. Also furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for pictures, china, silverware, small items, etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage. Cover stuffed furniture with cardboard or blankets to protect against dust.

  3. Larger appliances make excellent "packing cases" for blankets, towels and clothes. Defrost and rinse refrigerators and freezers with water and baking soda. Prop doors open.

  4. Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside one another.

  5. Tables with removable legs should be "broken-down" to save space.

  6. If you stand mattresses or box springs on their side, "prop" them up so they stand straight and avoid bending out of shape and becoming lumpy.

  7. Wrap mattresses and box springs in plastic sheeting or bags.

  8. Wipe all metal surfaces of bicycles and other metal goods with an oily rag before storing in order to retard rust.

  9. Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture.

  10. Use a good quality lock on your door. Cheap locks can rust. We have locks available.
