Plan your storage space by placing those items that you need to access in the front and allow for walkways to the rear of the storage unit.
Make an inventory, including model and serial numbers of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home or in a deposit box. A videotape can be helpful. Keep sales receipts, owner's manuals, warranties and other proofs of purchase away from the storage unit.
Place your storage items on 2 X 4 boards or on pallets to raise stored items and minimize dampness. Don’t lean items on concrete. Concrete floors or walls may become cold and damp.
CAUTION: Do not store anything COMBUSTIBLE (i.e., paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, paint, toxic items). Also do not store food or perishable items that can decay or attract bugs.
Use uniform boxes for easy stacking. Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25 lbs. to 30 lbs. It is best not to put too much in each box. We sell boxes in a variety of sizes.
List contents of boxes on all four sides; number the boxes; seal them with tape.
Since partially empty boxes can tip over and collapse, fill all boxes completely. Pack heavy items in small boxes that are easy to carry. Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes and pack to the ceiling. Place frequently used items near the door and valuables and small expensive items at the back of the unit to make them harder to reach.
Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in bubble wrap or paper and packed in sturdy boxes. Pictures, glass tops and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard and stacked on end and be clearly marked "FRAGILE"
If properly defrosted and cleaned, refrigerators may be used for storage. Tip: Once the refrigerator is clean and dry, use towells or cotton cloth items to wrap and pack pictures, desk supplies, etc. inside for quick unpacking/setup.
